When choosing a microphone, you need to think carefully about what you are wanting to do with it, and how it will integrate with any other equipment that you might have.

The main types of ‘budget’ microphones are dynamic and condenser microphones. There are not many solo online activities that will require anything beyond a simple condenser microphone such as the PreSonus PX-1. Condenser microphones allow you to capture a wider frequency range including the brighter/higher sounds of your instrument or voice. For online activities, they are a much better choice than a dynamic microphone which are generally better for live musical activities in a stage environment.

You also need to think about how you are going to connect to your computer or device. So for example if you won’t have a way of connecting an XLR microphone connector to your computer you need to consider other types of connectors such as stereo jack or USB.

Also, if you decide on a condenser microphone it will require phantom power, and in absence of a mixer or audio interface you need a battery powered condenser microphone.

If you are serious about developing your online work, we’d highly recommend investing in a condenser microphone such as the PreSonus PX-1 together with a simple audio interface such as the AudioBox iOne or iTwo. This will allow you to create, record and live stream to a high level, and will be suitable for your voice and instrument.
