Clive McGown is a Senior Lecturer in Communication at Manchester Metropolitan University. He has done extensive research, writing and teaching in the area of online communication. We asked him what he thought were the most important skills in learning to communicate effectively online. This is the first in a sequence of six units. We would suggest that you follow these through chronologically if at all possible.
Watch the following video and ask yourself these questions:
- Can charisma be taught?
- What is the link between charisma and engagement?
- How do these things link to the development of a charismatic and engaging personna online?
Clive’s argument is that charisma is built upon a love for what you are doing. Unless you are passionate about your music, your rehearsal, performance or the topic you are teaching, it will be impossible for you to infuse your communication with that passion and engage your audience online. But if you love what you do, this will instill within you and help you build a charismatic persona that will be attractive and engaging to others online.
Think about who you admire? At the time of writing, Liverpool Football Club have just won the Premier League. Their manager, Jurgen Klopp, is a passionate individual who is clearly able to inspire his players and get the most out of them. He is a charismatic individual who loves what he does!
The development of an dynamic and effective persona online is built upon this love for what you are doing. If you want to inspire others, engage with them, forge and strengthen your musical relationships with them online, then you have to start with the basics. Love what you do and let this guide what you chose to do online and how you choose to do it.
In the second part of the six part series, we are going to consider another key plank of effective online communication – practice.
