Online teaching can be very intense. Done well, the pupils’ degree of focus and engagement can be much higher than a normal face to face lesson.
It is important to stick to a regular structure and encourage students to follow this in their own practice. Try and make sure each section of the lesson is explained as you go along. Breaking up the lesson in this way can help build a good rapport with your student.
Any teaching material needs to be at both your own teaching space and with your student so that you can quickly refer to bar numbers, etc. It’s very quick and easy to take a photo of a piece or use a scanner app to turn the document into a PDF so that it can be shared on the screen using screen share features.
Here’s a basic lesson plan:
- Warm up : basics of instrument warm ups (breathing etc) to technical studies and scales
- Pieces : If possible, a short selection in each lesson to avoid too much repetition.
- Ensemble : this could be band music or playing duet/trio with pre-recorded tracks.
- Sight reading : This works well with the share screen options. You could also use this section for fun activities such as improvising, playing along with apps like Incredibox
These provide a good break in-between sections of the lesson plan and repetition is key to the message sinking in! We have backed these up with some quizzes for students with this playlist.
