During 2013, MD of UCan Play Dr Jonathan Savage worked on the Listen Imagine Compose project led by Professor Martin Fautley of Birmingham City University. The project investigated how composing is taught and learned in schools. The work involved composers, musicians, secondary music teachers, researchers, as well as music education organisations, and was supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Using an action research methodology, Dr Savage worked with teachers at the Fallibroome Academy and the composer Duncan Chapman to explore the use of technology within composition with a group of Year 9 students.
Sound and Music, Birmimgham Contemporary Music Group and Birmingham City University have announced the publication of the final report from the project that details the ways that every school can support young people learn to ‘Listen, Imagine, Compose’. The report can be downloaded here and the executive summary here.
