MD of UCan Play, Dr Jonathan Savage enjoyed a fantastic day of music making on the 21st November 2013 at the RNCM’s Carole Nash Recital Room. Students from the Popular Music Degree Programme, led by Course Director Andy Stott, were competing for five Roland Scholarships each worth £1000. Drummers, vocalists, guitarists (both electric and bass) and keyboard players all performed to an exceptional standard. Many of the performances were eloquent and captivating, with sensitive, skilful and imaginative uses of a range of technology. In the best of these performances, the technology itself became invisible as these talented students musical voices were expressed in powerful ways. Roland and UCan Play can not speak highly enough of the fantastic course provided by Andy Stott and his team at the RNCM.

At the end of the day, the panel of Dr Savage, Andy Stott and David Barnard (Director of Education at Roland UK) had a series of very difficult decisions to make. But, in the end, a final five were agreed upon. So, a massive congratulations to the five new RNCM Roland Scholars who are:

  • Daniel Brew (electric guitar)
  • Thom Fripp (electric guitar)
  • Josh Hussey (drums)
  • Mary McDougall (vocals)
  • Willian Unger (drums)

Roland and UCan Play will be working closely with these scholars over the coming year. Watch this space for further news!
